FAQ

  • What is strength training?

Strength training is any exercise that involves resistance to build muscle and improve your body's ability to produce force. This includes bodyweight exercises, dumbbells, resistance bands, and barbells. At Harold’s Gym, we focus on barbell strength training because it’s simple, effective, and scalable to any fitness level.

  • Is barbell training safe?

Yes—when done with proper technique and guidance, barbell training is not only safe but highly effective. At Harold’s Gym, we focus on teaching proper form, gradual progression, and individualized programs to reduce risk and build long-term strength safely. In fact, strength training can prevent injury by improving joint stability, muscle balance, and bone density.

  • Am I getting the same benefits from running/cardio workouts?

Cardio is great for your heart and lungs—but it doesn’t build or maintain muscle the way strength training does. Strength training helps preserve lean mass, boosts metabolism, supports joint health, and improves functional strength for daily life.

  • What are the benefits of strength training?

Strength training has a long list of benefits, including:

Increased muscle mass and strength; Improved bone density (helps prevent and reverse osteopenia/osteoporosis); Better balance and coordination (reduces fall risk); Boosted metabolism and fat loss; Enhanced mental health and confidence; Better insulin control and heart health.

  • Am I too old to start strength training?

Not at all! You’re never too old to get stronger. In fact, strength training becomes more important as we age to fight muscle loss, improve balance, increase bone density, and maintain independence. Many of our clients are in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond—and thriving!

  • I have type II diabetes, can strength training help?

Yes—research shows that strength training improves insulin sensitivity, which helps regulate blood sugar, and supports long-term blood glucose control. Combined with good nutrition and lifestyle habits, it’s one of the most powerful tools you can use to manage or even reverse type 2 diabetes.

  • Why should I start strength training?

Because strength is foundational to everything you do—walking, carrying groceries, getting off the floor, or playing with grandkids. Strength training helps you stay independent, energetic, and resilient at every age. The sooner you start, the sooner you feel the difference. The key is consistency.

  • Will strength training make me bulky?

Nope! Getting “bulky” takes years of extremely specific training, eating, and overall lifestyle. Most people, especially women and older adults, will experience toned muscles, improved posture, and a leaner look—not bulk. Most importantly, through strength training, you will feel healthier and move better.
